Ghost the Musical!

So last week I went to see Ghost the Musical at the Sunderland Empire, and I thought I’d have a go at a review. I can’t promise there won’t be any spoilers, so look away now if you’re worried!
So let’s break this down a little…

Story
For those of you who don’t know, Ghost tells the story of two lovers, Sam and Molly. Unfortunately, their happiness doesn’t last. Sam is killed, and finds himself trapped as a ghost on Earth. He soon finds out his death was not an accident, and that Molly is in danger. He can’t communicate with Molly in any way, but soon realises the psychic Oda Mae Brown can hear him and…well I’ll let you buy the DVD to find out the rest!
Anyway, the story is beautiful, and the addition of the musical element just amplifies its perfection. Check out the trailer below

Cast
The cast was led by Stewart Clarke as Sam and Rebecca Trehaun as Molly who were outstanding. The emotion they put into their roles really moved me, and made the whole thing seem real. Their voices are out of this world! Absolutely incredible, I am so happy to have them as the leads.
Special mention to Wendy Mae Brown who (conveniently) played Oda Mae Brown. She was terrific, and acted as much needed comic relief throughout the whole thing.
The whole cast were fantastic, but I must give a round of applause to Stevie Hutchinson who played the subway ghost. I’ve never seen anyone flipping around the stage rapping in a musical before and what can I say? It worked! He brought a whole new emotion into the musical - this anger and rage that was so ELECTRIC!

Set and effects
This may be where this show is set apart from any other show I’ve seen. The illusions and effects were incredible. I’m still not entirely sure how half of them were done! The set itself was simple, dressed up by projections and simple props. This kept it exciting and visually fantastic!

Music
I can’t get the songs out of my head. As previously stated, the voices were amazing. There was also a variety of styles, which meant there was something for everyone! All I can say really is to listen for yourself (linked a few below). Moving, captivating, perfect.

Overall? Maybe the best musical I have ever seen. Definitely see it if you get a chance!

  1. I'm a HUGE musical theatre fan, but Ghost is one that I've not done more research into. Other than hearing generally good comments about it, I've never read a review that actually made me want to go and see it...and now I do!
